New R128 s4 specification: producing compliant audio with Minnetonka Audio® AudioTools Server

The R128 standard provides recommendations for measuring and controlling loudness levels in media production and broadcasting. The aim is to ensure consistency of loudness levels between different programs, channels and devices to provide a more enjoyable listening experience.
While this ensures a much greater consistency in loudness between different programs, normalization of the audio alone could still result in wide variations in dialog level when moving between channels or between the feature presentation and the commercials. This is particularly true with cinematic content, which is typically mixed with a much higher dynamic range.
EBU R128 s4: new recommendation - Adapting Cinematic mixes for Television
R128 s4, the newest revision published in November 2023, takes aim directly at this issue of dialog intelligibility.
R128 s4 requests that the "loudness-to-dialog ratio" of cinematic content be reduced to no greater than 5 LU. Bringing the difference between the dialog level and overall program level down to this range should still give the mix plenty of room to breathe, ensuring an engaging listening experience, but allows for much greater consistency between different TV genres.
